This is the story behind the creation and development of our home server.
By Jack McGovern
About The Server
This project began with the idea of Jack McGovern & Simon Murray, wanting to create a home Server for ourselves. It has since grown to a server with multiple virtual machines,s a second computer solely for taking backups of the main server, and a pie hole and router combo for DNS and network routing.
The Home Server: Hardware

Hardware
The server is constructed out of an old case and a motherboard that we had from our own personal computers. The network switch and Razzberry pie 4 are part original backup system.

The Pie Hole
This is what is used to provide the ip assingments DNS services for the server. This, combined with the home private network, gives the ability for local access to the server.

Networking
For the server to be accessed easily and for a bit of fun, we constructed a private network in our apartment.
The Home Server: Software
Proxmox VE
The operating system that our server is running is Proxmox Virtual Environment. This was chosen due to its ease of creation, and it’s flexable abiliuty to hose may operating systems in its VMs.
Unbuntu, VM OS
This is our operating system that is running on our virtual machines, with it being a stable platform for may diffrent uses and it being common across many systems in the real world.
Pie Hole
This software allows us to host a private network for our server, as well as providing network security for our local devices and our private network.
The Home Server: Improvments

The server has had serval improvments since its creation with one of the largest being the move from a standalone case to a rackount system and the addition of a UPS system.
